What is Private Cloud Computing?

The Private Cloud is essentially a Cloud Infrastructure that operates solely for a single organizationor where the service access is limited to a specific group of people. Private Cloud Computing is comprised of networking, server hardware (which usually provides server virtualization), storage and management tools. This is most often managed internally but also can be hosted externally by a Managed Service Provider (MSP), which is then known as a Virtual Private Cloud.

Cloud computing offerings started on public clouds, but aren’t limited to them. Establishing private clouds is one of the most important current trends to modernize enterprise IT. Organizations are looking at private clouds as an approach to protect their investments and control core assets while taking advantage of cloud technologies. Another motivation for the increasing popularity of private cloud solutions among larger IT organizations are enterprise requirements, which often exceed the functionality offered by public cloud providers and their standard services, especially in areas such as security and compliancy, reliability, control and customization.

Experience has shown that enterprise cloud strategies that have an infrastructure-centric viewpoint and focus only on Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) solutions proved to be insufficient to unveil the benefits of cloud computing technologies. The IaaS cloud model abstracts the underlying infrastructure but falls short when it comes to addressing complexities imposed by the software solution stack. Many enterprise IT organizations started to consider other cloud services models such as Database as a Service (DBaaS), Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and, ultimately, Anything as a Service (XaaS) to provide:

Benefits of using ECH for SAP solutions

  • A standardized foundational solution stack to run business applications
  • Consistent, automated application management and deployment
  • Commoditized platform services that can be consumed and shared by business applications via Application Program Interface (API) calls.

Elastic Cloud

Auto scaling is a cloud computing feature that allows users to automatically scale cloud services, like virtual machines (VM) and server capacities, up or down, depending on defined situations.Auto scaling also ensures that new instances are seamlessly increased during demand spikes and decreased during demand drops, enabling consistent performance for lower costs.Auto Scaling can also automatically increase the number of instances during demand spikes to maintain performance and decrease capacity during lulls to reduce costs. Auto Scaling is well suited both to applications that have stable demand patterns or that experience hourly, daily, or weekly variability in usage.

Features and Benefits

Maintain your instance availability

Whether you are running one cloud instance or thousands, you can use Auto Scaling to detect impaired instances and unhealthy applications, and replace the instances without your intervention. This ensures that your application is getting the compute capacity that you expect.

Automatically Scale Your Fleet

Auto Scaling enables you to follow the demand curve for your applications closely, reducing the need to manually provision capacity in advance. For example, you can set a condition to add new instances in increments to the Auto Scaling group when the average utilization of your fleet is high; and similarly, you can set a condition to remove instances in the same increments when CPU utilization is low. If you have predictable load changes, you can set a schedule through Auto Scaling to plan your scaling activities.Auto Scaling enables you to run your fleet at optimal utilization.

Opennebula Autoscale allows users and administrators to define, execute and manage multi-tiered applications, or services composed of interconnected Virtual Machines with deployment dependencies between them. Each group of Virtual Machines is deployed and managed as a single entity, and is completely integrated with the advanced OpenNebula user and group management.

Benefits of using ECH for SAP solutions

  • Define multi-tiered applications (services) as collection of applications.
  • Manage multi-tiered applications as a single entity.
  • Automatic execution of services with dependencies.
  • Provide configurable services from a catalog and self-service portal.
  • Enable tight, efficient administrative control.
  • Fine-grained access control for the secure sharing of services with other users.
  • Auto-scaling policies based on performance metrics and schedule.
